Dr. Amen’s Practice and Diet Recommendations

Daniel Amen, Ph.D is a nationally renowned American Psychiatrist and neural specialist who founded the Amen clinics. The Amen clinics are known primarily for treating ADHD and other neurological disorders. Dr. Amen has also conducted studies regarding athletes with brain injuries and also works as a post-concussion consultant for the National Football League. In recent years, the Amen clinics have come up with their own prescription for eating healthily for the brain.

Just as a diet high in processed foods, sugars and fats makes you gain weight to the point of obesity, it also doesn’t do your cognitive functioning any favors, either. Daniel Amen recommends a diet high in grain, fruit, nuts, vegetables, cottage cheese and eggs. In 2010, he authored a blog for the Huffington Post giving tips to those who are financially challenged on eating healthier without spending a fortune. For example, instead of spending a lot on meat, egg whites alone are highly rich in protein and eggs can be as low as literally $1 a dozen. Cottage cheese is a good source as well. In fact, Dr. Amen has claimed that if he possessed a magic wand, he’d instantly make every kid eat it for breakfast before going to school.

According to Dr. Amen, a diet high in processed foods, sugars and fats amps your chances of having Alzheimer’s disease. It also triggers poor impulse control, bad judgment and “stuck thoughts”. This is due to a reduction in serotonin and dopamine production in the brain.

Dr. Amen is very dedicated to educating the public about neurological disorders, brain injuries but especially about healthy diets for both the body and the brain. According to him, low fat diets are just as disastrous because even our brains do need some fat in order to properly function. It’s just a matter of dieting on the right fats such as Omega-3, which is found in salmon.
