The OSI Group recently completed an expansion in its Toledo, Spain plant. The expansion cost 17 million Euro and increased the production capacity from 12,000 tons of processed chicken to 24,000 tons. OSI Food Solutions expanded the plant to meet the growing demand in for chicken in Spain and Portugal.
The demand for chicken has been steadily rising each year. Over the past ten years, the demand rose 6% each year and in the past three years it’s averaged an 8% growth increase each year. To meet the need, a 22,000 square foot building was added. This building contains a shipping area, a production hall, refrigerated rooms for waste container storage, facility supply storage, service areas for oil, shipping and receiving areas, a social area for employees and hot water and nitrogen tanks.
The expansion increased production of beef, pork and chicken products t a total production of 45,000 tons. It also added 20 jobs to a employee total of 140. It also allows OSI to add additional lines of food products in their Spanish plant.
The plant was both expanded and made more energy efficient. After the additions were completed, the plant’s electricity consumption was reduced by 20%. The heat needed to warm 200 cubic meters of water for the nightly cleaning staff was created by recovering it from the cogeneration system and the refrigeration unit, again saving even more money.
The plant’s security system was also improved. A new perimeter surveillance system was installed. Indoor cameras and a more advanced fire fighting system were added to increase the overall safety of the plant.
